Since 1965
We’ve been involved in farming in Northern Ireland for generations, but what is Pepper Transport today began in 1965 with a single truck and a commitment to provide an essential service to the farming industry, in hauling bagged feeds from their producers and delivering them direct to the farmyard. Our dedication to customer satisfaction and the unique personal service of a hard working family business were our cornerstones then, and they still are today.
Established in 1965, and now with over fifty year’s experience, Pepper Dromore Limited has been built on a foundation which goes back to 1929 when Fred Pepper the father and grandfather of the present directors purchased his first lorry at the age of 18. Fred operated three trucks before the Ulster Transport Authority (A Government Department Formerly NITRB) purchased his business circa 1948 and gave him the job of Manager in the Banbridge Depot.
Fred remained in this role until 1965 when he retired, it was at this time Fred was approached by one of his many contacts in the transport business asked if he knew of a haulier to carry out bagged deliveries for Levers Feeds of York road Belfast. When Fred spoke to his wife Margaret on the matter her response was “we could do that”, and so a business was born. A truck was purchased and Alan their second son took on the work, several years later Derek their eldest son purchased a lorry and joined the business. These early years were hard physical work delivering bagged animal feed to farms. As the workload increased more trucks were purchased and by 1970 the first pneumatic discharge bulk lorry was purchased, this greatly increased productivity and over the next few years most deliveries moved from bags to bulk.
There have been many changes in the past fifty years. In 1965 trucks were four-wheeler flat beds with a payload of 4 tonnes. Over the years this has changed from two axle rigids to three and four axle rigids and then to tandem artic and tandem trailer combination, the introduction of steering axle trailers in the nineties led to increased access of larger trucks to farms resulting in efficiencies in delivery cost. As access to farms has improved over the years, there is still a need for rigid vehicles, however many deliveries can now accommodate six axle truck and trailer combinations, with up to 27 tonne payload.
Since the business started it has been built on commitment to service and this is still our core value. Over the years the business has grown and adapted to meet new challenges and while the core business still provides transport for the Agri Food sector, we welcome enquires regarding all sectors of Road Transport. With a distinctive fleet of trucks based across Co Down and Co Antrim, and our main base at Dromore on the main North South corridor we are ideally located for business in both Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland.
